Sacred ground since before the 13th century the ruins of Elgin Cathedral are still hauntingly beautiful. Walking under its sky roof it’s easy to find yourself lost in the mystique of time gone by and to imagine that you can still hear the hushed murmurs of the thousands of prayers and dreams offered up to life in this place century after century.
The town of Elgin, Moray, is a 45 minute drive from Inverness airport. This beautiful region lies in-between the rugged and spectacular Highlands to the north of Scotland and the fertile farmlands of the north-east. Although Moray belongs to neither, and has its own character, it shares the best elements of both – from the snow-capped peaks of the Cairngorm Mountains to the unspoiled coastline of the Moray Firth known all over for its resident school of bottlenose dolphins.
Access to pure water from crystal clear mountain streams has enabled Moray to stake its claim as the heartland of the Scotch whisky industry – the area is home to more than 45 distilleries, and once in Elgin whiskey lovers will find themselves on the only malt whiskey trail in the world.
Accommodation ranges from quaint seaside B&B’s to grand mansion hotels, and as you’re right on the Spey River look forward to some of the best salmon in Scotland.
