Want medieval? You have it with Borthwick Castle. This handsome fortress was built in 1430 and is one of the largest and best preserved surviving medieval Scottish fortifications. For nearly six hundred years the castle has overlooked the gently rolling hills on the edge of the Scottish borders near Edinburgh.
Despite feeling worlds away, you are only 13 miles from Edinburgh with streets steeped in history and a thriving cultural scene. From Borthwick choose between exploring the surrounding coast and countryside of East, West and Midlothian with bracing beach walks and invigorating rambles along the Pentland Hills or heading into town for a warming visit to the Scotch Whisky Experience and a delicious meal of seasonal, locally sourced produce (think tasty berries and hearty puddings!). The City of Edinburgh offers the perfect balance between all things traditional and contemporary and the heart of the city is a World Heritage Site.
For history buffs Borthwick Castle was visited twice by Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1563 and 1567, when she was besieged inside while under the protection of 6th Lord Borthwick. She escaped the siege by disguising herself as a page. Ever since then an apparition of Mary, dressed as a page boy has been seen ( perhaps the Queen herself will attend your wedding!).
At Borthwick Castle you can take your vows in the beautiful candlelit Chapel, and arrange for your celebratory wedding meal to be held in the grandeur of the Great Hall.
